Where are Wandering Folk rugs and cushion covers made?
The process begins in the Wandering Folk headquarters here in Byron Bay, NSW. Owner Sharnee Thorpe sketches each individual print and designs the rugs with love and care. Her designs are then sent to our amazing family run factory in China who we have worked very closely with since the beginning, 5 years ago. Sharnee has visited the factory numerous times and intends on continuing this to keep our relationship strong.
Are the cushion covers and picnic rugs manufactured sustainably?
Each Picnic rug and cushion cover is digitally printed in one piece. Digital printing is the most sustainable way of printing, as it uses a lot less water than any other printing method. The printing method and inks plus the UPF/Waterproofing treatment are all R.E.A.C.H compliant, which means that they do not harm you or the environment.

Why are Wandering Folk rugs and cushion covers valued at such a high price point?
These rugs are ethically handmade to last a life-time of picnics with two layers of heavy duty cotton canvas- the bottom layer has waterproof treatment so you can sit on damp ground, the top layer is digitally printed which is better for the environment and takes more time than other printing methods.
All prints are hand-drawn by owner Sharnee Thorpe, it’s a piece of art that she works on for weeks, sometimes months. A UPF coating is applied over the top to slow down the print fade on the cotton. The chunky cotton tassels are also hand made and hand dyed.
Care Instructions
Thank you for purchasing a Wandering Folk Picnic Rug , Cushion or Cooler.
Our beautiful picnic rugs and cushions are made of 100% cotton canvas and will live and wear with you over time.
Our picnic rugs have a UPF30+ coating applied to make the print last longer in the sun. Prior to 2018, the rugs without this new coating may naturally fade over time with lots of use in the sunlight.
To keep your rug looking its best, try to avoid spilling acidic or harmful chemicals on the surface. Lemon juice, alcohol, salt water or anything similar should be washed off immediately by spot cleaning with cold soapy water.
As a last resort for removing stains, you can *gentle machine wash your rug alone in cold water, but we recommend putting rubber bands around the tassel ends to prevent them from unraveling and fluffing up.
Prior to storing, always ensure your rug is fully dried out to prevent mould.
* Warning: Machine wash our darker colour rugs only ( Emerald / Wildflower / Spice ) as the dye on the leather tag will run. If you really need to machine wash our lighter coloured rugs ( Pastel / Crystal / Romance / Atlantis / Aztec Ink ) then we recommend removing the leather logo label with a seam ripper, which is easily done with a seam ripper and doesn’t damage the rug or cushion.
